A little history

Calne was dominated by C&T Harris's bacon factory from 1770 until its closure in 1983 — at its peak employing most of the town and producing bacon shipped across the empire. Nearby Avebury and Silbury Hill are among the most important prehistoric sites in Europe. Bowood House is one of Wiltshire's finest stately homes.

Local tip

Bowood House and gardens are magnificent — the rhododendron walks in May are extraordinary. The Cherhill White Horse carved into the hillside is visible from miles away. Avebury stone circle is just 6 miles away and far less crowded than Stonehenge.
