Burton's unique water chemistry — high in gypsum — made it the ideal place to brew pale ales in the 19th century. At its peak, a third of all beer brewed in Britain came from Burton. Bass Brewery made Burton globally famous. The Burton Union system of fermentation was developed here. The town's brewing heritage is preserved at the National Brewery Centre.
