About Burnham-on-Crouch

Known for

The sailing capital of Essex (the Crouch estuary is one of England's finest sailing waters), the waterfront yacht clubs, the oysters, and a small Essex town of extraordinary maritime character

A little history

Burnham-on-Crouch has been a sailing centre since the Victorian era — the River Crouch's sheltered waters and strong tides make it ideal for racing. The town has five yacht clubs and hosts major offshore races. The oyster fishery has been important for centuries.

Local tip

The High Street running parallel to the river is charming — beautiful Georgian buildings and independent shops. The waterfront for yacht watching. Local Crouch oysters are exceptional. The Burnham Sailing Week regatta in August.
