Burgess Hill developed as a railway town in the mid-19th century, growing rapidly as a commuter settlement for London. The town's proximity to Brighton and Gatwick has made it one of the larger West Sussex towns. The Bedelands nature reserve preserves ancient farmland on the edge of town.
