About Burford

Known for

The High Street (one of England's most beautiful medieval streets, descending to the Windrush), the wool church, the Cotswolds gateway, and a small Oxfordshire town of extraordinary architectural perfection

A little history

Burford grew wealthy from the medieval wool trade and its wide, sloping High Street of 15th and 16th century buildings reflects that prosperity. The Church of St John the Baptist contains remarkable medieval monuments. Oliver Cromwell imprisoned Leveller mutineers in the church in 1649 — the scratched inscription 'Anthony Sedley 1649 prisoner' is still visible.

Local tip

The High Street descending to the Windrush bridge is genuinely one of England's great views. The church for the Leveller inscription. The Windrush meadows below the town for a picnic. Arrive early morning before the coaches.
