About Budleigh Salterton

Known for

The pebble beach (one of England's finest), the Otter Estuary nature reserve, the East Devon AONB, Sir John Everett Millais's painting The Boyhood of Raleigh (set here), and a small Devon resort of exceptional Edwardian character

A little history

Budleigh Salterton's long pebble beach was immortalised by Sir John Everett Millais in his 1870 painting The Boyhood of Raleigh — showing the young Sir Walter Raleigh listening to a sailor's tales. The town's Edwardian character is remarkably preserved. The Otter Estuary is one of Devon's finest nature reserves.

Local tip

The pebble beach is genuinely beautiful — the distinctive red pebbles are unique. The Otter Estuary at the western end for birdwatching. The town centre for excellent independent shops. The East Devon Way walking route passes through.
