A little history

Bude grew as a small port at the northern end of the Bude Canal, built in 1823 to carry sand inland for fertiliser. The town's surf beaches have made it one of the most popular seaside destinations in the South West. The famous Bude sea pool, carved into the rocks, has been a local institution since 1930.

Local tip

The Bude sea pool is extraordinary — one of England's finest natural tidal swimming pools, free to use. Summerleaze Beach for families. Crooklets for surf. The canal towpath walk inland is peaceful. The Castle Heritage Centre for local history.
