About Bromley

Known for

H.G. Wells's birthplace, the Churchill Theatre, Bromley's strong independent high street, the North Downs Way gateway, and London's largest outer borough with more countryside than almost any other

A little history

H.G. Wells was born in Bromley in 1866 — the town shaped the imagination of the man who wrote The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. Bromley has been an important market town since the medieval period and remains one of London's strongest outer borough commercial centres.

Local tip

The Churchill Theatre for excellent touring productions. Norman Park for athletics and recreation. The North Downs Way starts nearby for serious walking. Keston Ponds and Holwood for countryside surprisingly close to London.
