About Bridgwater

Known for

The Bridgwater Carnival (the world's largest illuminated carnival, held every November), the Battle of Sedgemoor nearby (the last battle fought on English soil), the River Parrett, and a Somerset market town with an extraordinary annual spectacle

A little history

Bridgwater was a significant port on the River Parrett. The Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 — the last pitched battle on English soil — was fought just outside the town, ending Monmouth's Rebellion. The Bridgwater Carnival, first held in 1881, has grown into the world's largest illuminated carnival procession.

Local tip

The Bridgwater Carnival in November is genuinely extraordinary — enormous illuminated floats parading through the town, completely free to watch. The Battle of Sedgemoor site is nearby and well marked. The Quantock Hills for walking.
