About Bridgnorth

Known for

The Severn Valley Railway (one of Britain's finest heritage railways), the cliff railway (the steepest inland funicular in England), the River Severn gorge, and a Shropshire town dramatically split between High Town and Low Town

A little history

Bridgnorth is divided into High Town (on the sandstone cliff) and Low Town (on the River Severn) — connected by the cliff railway, built in 1892, which runs at a gradient of 1 in 1.5. The Severn Valley Railway runs steam trains along the gorge to Kidderminster.

Local tip

The cliff railway is a genuine delight — the steepest inland funicular in England. The Severn Valley Railway for steam trains along the gorge. The High Town for extraordinary views over the Severn. The castle ruins and Governor's House (which leans more than Pisa's tower).
