About Brecon

Known for

The Brecon Beacons National Park gateway, the Brecon Jazz Festival (one of Wales's great annual events), the Cathedral, the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, and a Welsh market town of extraordinary natural beauty

A little history

Brecon — Aberhonddu in Welsh — has been the market centre for the Brecon Beacons uplands since the Norman period. The priory church became a cathedral in 1923. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, restored to navigation, passes through the town. The Jazz Festival has drawn international artists since 1984.

Local tip

The Beacons walking from Brecon is extraordinary — Pen y Fan is the highest peak in South Wales. The canal towpath walk to Talybont is beautiful. The Jazz Festival in August fills the town with music. The Cathedral for the medieval architecture.
