Brampton sits at the centre of Hadrian's Wall country — the Roman frontier built from 122 AD stretches through the surrounding landscape. The town has been a market centre for the North Cumbrian hills since the medieval period. Talkin Tarn, a glacial lake on the edge of town, is one of Cumbria's finest natural features.

Local tip

Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald fort is just a short drive — one of the best preserved sections. Talkin Tarn for rowing and walking. The town's octagonal Moot Hall and market square are charming. The Howard Arms for a proper Cumbrian lunch.
