About Bow

Known for

Bow Bells (within earshot makes you a true Cockney), the Suffragettes (the Bryant and May match girls' strike of 1888 was a defining moment), the Roman Road Market, and a rapidly changing East London neighbourhood with deep working-class roots

A little history

Bow's Bryant and May match factory was the site of the 1888 match girls' strike — one of the most significant events in British labour history, inspiring the wider trade union movement. Bow Church's bells define the Cockney birthright. Roman Road has been a market street since the 19th century.

Local tip

Roman Road Market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays is one of East London's last great traditional street markets — genuinely excellent for cheap fresh produce. Victoria Park is one of London's finest. The Suffragette history is marked locally.
