A little history

A town that barely existed before 1800 — Bournemouth was a heathland until developers built it from scratch as a Victorian health resort. It grew faster than almost any town in England. RLS wrote Kidnapped here. J.R.R. Tolkien is buried here.

Local tip

The Lower Gardens are extraordinary — a mile of parks from the town square to the sea. Christchurch Road for independent food and the student vibe. Boscombe for a more local Bournemouth.
