About Boroughbridge

Known for

The Devil's Arrows (three massive prehistoric standing stones, the tallest in England), the River Ure, the Roman road Dere Street, and a small North Yorkshire market town with extraordinary prehistoric heritage

A little history

The Devil's Arrows — three massive millstone grit monoliths standing up to 22 feet high — were erected around 2000 BC and remain the tallest standing stones in England. Boroughbridge sits on Dere Street, the Roman road from York to Scotland. The town was an important medieval river crossing.

Local tip

The Devil's Arrows are extraordinary and almost entirely unvisited — you can stand next to them with barely another soul around. Walk between all three. The River Ure for fishing and walking.
