About Bodmin

Known for

Bodmin Moor (the wild Cornish upland), Bodmin Jail (now a visitor attraction), the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway, Jamaica Inn (Daphne du Maurier's famous smuggling novel set here), and the county town of Cornwall

A little history

Bodmin was the county town of Cornwall until Truro took over administrative functions. The town's jail, built in 1779, held the Cornish Crown Jewels during WWI. Daphne du Maurier set Jamaica Inn on the moor at Bolventor, just outside the town. Bodmin Moor's wild granite upland surrounds the town.

Local tip

Bodmin Jail is genuinely atmospheric — the Victorian prison and the darker history of Cornish justice. Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway is excellent. Rough Tor and Brown Willy on the Moor for the finest upland walking in Cornwall.
