A little history

The world's first working-class holiday resort, Blackpool grew with the railway from the 1840s. The Tower (modelled on the Eiffel Tower) opened in 1894. The Illuminations began in 1879. The Pleasure Beach opened in 1896.

Local tip

The Illuminations in autumn are genuinely spectacular and free. The South Pier for peace. Central Pier for dancing. The Tower Ballroom is extraordinary. Fresh fish and chips on the seafront — proper ones, not tourist traps.
