About Bishops Stortford

Known for

The birthplace of Cecil Rhodes (who founded Rhodesia and gave his name to the Rhodes Scholarship), the Waytemore Castle ruins, the River Stort navigation, and a prosperous Hertfordshire market town at the Stansted gateway

A little history

Cecil Rhodes — the Victorian imperialist who founded Rhodesia, established De Beers diamonds, and endowed the Rhodes Scholarship — was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1853. His father's house is now a museum. The town has been a market centre since the medieval period.

Local tip

The Cecil Rhodes Museum in his father's vicarage is genuinely interesting. The Waytemore Castle mound for views. The River Stort for walking and narrowboat watching. The Saturday market.
