A little history

Auckland Castle has been the home of the Prince Bishops of Durham — one of the most powerful ecclesiastical offices in England — since the 12th century. The castle's collection of Zurbarán paintings of Jacob and his sons, bought in 1756, is one of the most important in Britain. A major investment programme has transformed the town into a cultural destination.

Local tip

Auckland Castle is genuinely extraordinary — the Zurbarán paintings alone justify the visit. Kynren, the outdoor theatrical spectacular in summer, is one of England's most ambitious open-air performances. Binchester Roman Fort for genuine archaeology.
