About Birstall

Known for

Oakwell Hall (the model for Fieldhead in Charlotte Brontë's Shirley), the Red House Museum (the model for Briarmains in Shirley), and a West Yorkshire village at the heart of Brontë country's lesser-known sites

A little history

Birstall's Oakwell Hall — a 16th century manor house — was Charlotte Brontë's model for 'Fieldhead' in her novel Shirley. The nearby Red House was home to the Taylor family, Charlotte's close friends, and became 'Briarmains' in the novel. Birstall is at the heart of a Brontë landscape rarely visited.

Local tip

Oakwell Hall is excellent — free museum and grounds with the Brontë connection clearly explained. The Red House Museum in nearby Gomersal. The Spen Valley Greenway cycle route passes through.
