A little history

Betws-y-Coed — 'prayer house in the wood' in Welsh — grew as an artists' colony in the Victorian era when painters came to capture the dramatic waterfalls and woodland. The arrival of the railway in 1868 opened it to tourists. It remains the most popular destination in Snowdonia National Park.

Local tip

The Swallow Falls is the most visited waterfall in Wales — go early morning before the coaches. The Pont-y-Pair bridge for the best village view. The Conwy Valley walks up towards Dolwyddelan. Fly Fishing on the Conwy and Llugwy.
