A little history

Berwick changed hands between England and Scotland 13 times between 1147 and 1482 before being finally ceded to England. The Elizabethan ramparts built between 1558 and 1569 are the finest complete town walls in Britain. The town technically remained at war with Russia until 1966.

Walk the complete circuit of the town walls — extraordinary and free. The Barracks (one of Britain's first purpose-built barracks, now a museum). The Tweed salmon fishing. Cross both bridges for the views.
