A little history

The Battle of Hastings was fought here on 14 October 1066 — William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey on the spot where King Harold fell, with the high altar marking the exact place of his death. The town that grew around the abbey has barely changed its medieval character.

Local tip

The abbey and battlefield are extraordinary — English Heritage managed and excellent. Walk the battlefield trail where the Saxon shield wall stood. The town centre for excellent independent shops.
