About Basingstoke

Known for

The Basing House ruins (the largest private house in Tudor England, besieged during the Civil War), the Anvil concert venue, the Festival Place shopping centre, and a Hampshire town that was radically redeveloped in the 1960s

A little history

Old Basing's Basing House was once the largest private house in England, besieged for two years during the Civil War before its destruction by Cromwell in 1645. Basingstoke itself was largely rebuilt in the 1960s as an overspill town for London.

Local tip

Basing House ruins are genuinely fascinating — the Civil War siege story is extraordinary, and the ruins are atmospheric. The Anvil for excellent music. Festival Place for shopping. The Willis Museum for local history.
