A little history

Barry grew explosively in the 1880s as a coal export dock, briefly becoming one of the world's busiest ports. Barry Island became the favourite seaside destination for South Wales valleys communities.

Local tip

Barry Island is genuinely fun — the Gavin and Stacey connections are everywhere. Whitmore Bay beach is excellent. The funfair for nostalgia.
