About Barrow In Furness

Known for

Submarine building (BAE Systems builds Britain's nuclear submarines here), Furness Abbey, Piel Island, the Dock Museum, and a Cumbrian industrial town of genuine maritime and medieval significance

A little history

Barrow grew from almost nothing to a major industrial town in 50 years during the Victorian era — the fastest growing town in England at its peak. The Furness Abbey ruins, founded in 1123, are among the finest Cistercian remains in England. BAE Systems continues to build nuclear submarines here.

Local tip

Furness Abbey is genuinely magnificent and often quiet. Piel Island — accessible by ferry — has a pub, a castle and a king (the local landlord is traditionally crowned King of Piel). The Dock Museum for local history.
