About Barnard Castle Town

Known for

The Bowes Museum (a French chateau in the Durham dales, housing one of England's finest art collections), the castle ruins, the Teesdale market town, and Dominic Cummings's controversial lockdown drive

A little history

Barnard Castle grew around the Norman castle on the Tees. The Bowes Museum, built by John Bowes and his wife Joséphine to house their extraordinary art collection, opened in 1892 — a French chateau incongruously and magnificently dropped into County Durham.

Local tip

The Bowes Museum is genuinely extraordinary — a French chateau stuffed with Old Masters, tapestries and the famous Silver Swan automaton. The castle for Tees valley views. The market on Wednesdays.
