About Balham

Known for

The Gateway to the South (Peter Sellers's famous BBC sketch), the excellent food and drink scene on Bedford Hill and Balham High Road, the Common proximity, and a South London neighbourhood that's become one of the most desirable postcodes

A little history

Balham developed as a Victorian suburb along the railway line from London Bridge. Peter Sellers's 1958 BBC sketch 'Balham — Gateway to the South' turned the name into a comedy punchline. The neighbourhood's transformation into one of South London's most sought-after addresses came in the 1990s and 2000s.

Local tip

Bedford Hill is the place to eat and drink — a genuinely excellent strip of independent restaurants, bars and cafes. Tooting Bec Common for open space. The Bedford pub for live music.
