About Bacup

Known for

The Britannia Coconut Dancers (the last surviving moorland morris tradition in England), the Rossendale Valley textiles, and a small East Lancashire mill town with one of Britain's most extraordinary folk traditions

A little history

Bacup's Britannia Coconut Dancers — who dance through the town on Easter Saturday with blackened faces, coconut shells on their knees and hands, and gartered legs — claim a tradition dating back to Moorish miners who came to work the local mines. Whatever the origin, it is unique in Britain.

Local tip

The Coconut Dancers on Easter Saturday is one of England's great folk spectacles — genuinely unmissable if you're nearby. The Rossendale countryside for walking. The town has good community spirit.
