About Armagh

Known for

Two cathedrals on opposite hills (both called St Patrick's), the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, the apple orchards and being Northern Ireland's ecclesiastical capital

A little history

St Patrick chose Armagh as the centre of Irish Christianity in the 5th century. Two cathedrals — Catholic and Church of Ireland — stand on rival hills. One of Ireland's oldest and most significant cities.

Local tip

Walk between the two cathedrals — the contrast between the ancient hill church and the Gothic revival is remarkable. The Georgian Mall. The October Apple Fair.
