A little history

Appleby-in-Westmorland was the county town of the former county of Westmorland. The Appleby Horse Fair, held every June since a Royal Charter of 1685, is the world's largest annual gathering of Romani people — attracting up to 10,000 visitors.

Local tip

The Horse Fair in June is extraordinary — the washing of horses in the Eden is a genuinely unique spectacle. The Eden Valley for walking. The Settle-Carlisle railway through the town for one of England's great railway journeys.
