The Annan Riding of the Marches (one of Scotland's great Common Ridings), the salmon fishing on the River Annan, Edward Irving (the charismatic preacher born here), and a Dumfriesshire market town on the Solway Firth

A little history

Annan has been a royal burgh since the 12th century. Edward Irving, founder of the Catholic Apostolic Church and one of the most celebrated preachers of the 19th century, was born here in 1792. The town's Common Riding preserves ancient traditions of boundary checking.

Local tip

The Riding of the Marches in July is a genuine community celebration. The River Annan for salmon fishing — one of the better Solway rivers. The Solway coast nearby for birdwatching.
