A little history

A Roman fort at the head of Lake Windermere. The town grew as a Victorian tourist destination and has been feeding and outfitting walkers and climbers for 150 years. Bridge House — an 18th century cottage built over the River Rothay — is an icon.

Local tip

Walk up Stock Ghyll Force before the tourists arrive. The independent outdoor shops on Lake Road are exceptional — better than anything in a city. Friday market for local food.
