About Alton

Known for

The Civil War Battle of Alton (bullet holes still in St Lawrence's Church door), the Watercress Line steam railway, Jane Austen country (Chawton is a mile away), and a Hampshire market town of real historical depth

A little history

The Battle of Alton in 1643 saw Royalist soldiers make a last stand inside St Lawrence's Church — bullet holes from the musket fire still mark the ancient oak door. Jane Austen lived at nearby Chawton from 1809 until her death, writing Persuasion and Emma there.

Local tip

St Lawrence's Church — the bullet-pocked door is genuinely extraordinary, a direct physical link to the Civil War. Jane Austen's House at Chawton is a short walk or drive. The Watercress Line steam trains to Alresford.
