About Alresford

Known for

The Watercress Line steam railway, watercress farming on the chalk streams, the beautiful Georgian Broad Street, and a Hampshire market town of outstanding architectural quality

A little history

New Alresford was planned in the 13th century by Bishop Godfrey de Lucy as a model medieval town, with a reservoir (the Big Pond) to power mills on the River Alre. The watercress industry grew in the 19th century using the pure chalk stream water that still flows through the town.

Local tip

Broad Street is one of Hampshire's finest Georgian streets — genuinely lovely. The Watercress Line steam railway runs to Alton. The Big Pond walk. Fresh watercress from the local farms.
