Known for

The Dalmore Distillery (maker of some of Scotland's most celebrated single malts), the Cromarty Firth, the Easter Ross farming landscape, and a Ross-shire town with world-class whisky heritage

A little history

Alness grew as a small market town serving Easter Ross. The Dalmore Distillery, founded in 1839, produces some of Scotland's most highly regarded — and expensive — single malt whiskies. The town expanded significantly in the 1970s with North Sea oil industry workers.

Local tip
