A little history

Abertillery grew around the coalmines of the Ebbw Fach valley. The Six Bells Colliery disaster of 1960 killed 45 miners. The Guardian memorial sculpture was unveiled in 2010.

Local tip

The Guardian sculpture at Six Bells is one of Wales's most moving public artworks — genuinely worth the journey. The valley walks are excellent.
